“The Coin Flip” is Mary Bluestocking’s debut comic. Created for the Lucky WIP anthology of WIP Comics, London.

It is a playful, yet moving, story about an individual who’s split by chance. The tale features classic, Bluestocking themes such as self-hood and duplicity, bonds and rupture, yet it is part of a new, exploratory series where she relates these existential themes to the findings of quantum physics. The series is the product of Mary’s sincere attempts to construct a sense of personal meaning and an everyday understanding of the nature of reality when she sets aside religious thinking and pursues guidance from the forefront of contemporary science.

The piece follows the Copenhagen interpretation of Schrödinger’s work with its mirror universes collapsing upon observation. It features quantum tunneling and also plays with ideas of quantum entanglement, the question of energy dispersion between multiple realities and, of course, superimposition.
