When I signed up to contribute a comic for the 2024 WiP anthology of the theme “short stories” I puzzled at how to support this theme when any and all short form comics are already short stories.

Before you know it, I was going meta….

“Shorts” portrays an audience captured in various moments of four different film screenings of four suggested films, presumably by artists other than Mary (though, obviously everything in the comic is Mary’s creation. Ha!).

“Shorts” is a comic without a narrative, or a 4-piece comic art series. As such, “Shorts” is the ultimate post-modern, self-reflexive comic. It is a comic portraying film, films by other artists but all Mary and it’s a comic which transcends narrative in order to reflect back philosophically on themes of story, film as a medium, comics as a medium and authorship.

“Shorts: Four (Major) Artists” is a 4-page comic. Written and illustrated by Mary Bluestocking.
